Have you ever been standing in the middle of a farmer’s market with your head spinning trying to figure out who needs a license and what license(s) they need. The U.S. House of Representatives passed the Limit, Save, Grow Act of 2023, which sets forth their plans for reducing the federal budget by slashing nondefense programs, including ones that support environmental public health. The Senate has yet to set spending limits for the federal budget, which means there remains much negotiation regarding the final fiscal year (FY) 2024 budget.  

NEHA has submitted requests to both the House and Senate appropriators for robust funding of both FDA’s food safety programs and CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health.

NEHA encourages you to reach out to your congressional members to urge them to protect the federal environmental health programs that are vital to every state, local, tribal, and territorial environmental public health program. For your convenience, below is a draft email you can use to send to your legislators.

Federal funding for environmental public health programs is vital to ensuring clean air and water, healthy schools, safe food, and response to climate disasters in every community.

We support FY 2024 funding of both FDA’s food safety programs and CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health at the following levels:

• CDC National Center for Environmental Health: $300 million

• Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry: $95 million

• FDA Food Safety Program: $1,282 million

• Federal and State Initiative: $140 million

Who? Environmental and public health/science students

What? Students will be paired with a mentor whom they will meet with during lunch at the WEHA annual conference on September 13th, 2023.  Accepted applicants will receive FREE conference registration, hotel stay at the conference delegated hotel, breakfast and lunch!

When? Application deadline: August 3rd, 2023

              WEHA Annual Conference:  September 13-15, 2023

Where?  The Hilton Appleton Paper Valley Hotel

Why participate? Get help networking with environmental and public health professionals and get your career questions answered!

Commitments:

·       Attend day one of the WEHA annual conference & consider staying for the rest of the conference (included in your registration)

·       Register as a WEHA member (membership is only $10!)

·       Meet with your mentor for lunch the first day of the WEHA annual conference and go to a conference session with your mentor

·       After the conference, discuss question(s) provided by WEHA with your mentor by email, telephone, or in person

·       It is recommended that students meet with their mentors at least once throughout the year to talk in person. If the student is able to travel, this could be a good job shadowing opportunity.
