WTF: Where’s the Floor?  Social Worker and Sanitarian Combined Approach to Home Health Hazards

How many times have you received a call where you feel stuck, unprepared, or overwhelmed with an individual’s living environment? What resources, services, and skills do you possess or have access to offer these community members? The La Crosse County Health Department has developed an innovative way to understand and help to meet the needs of the people they serve.  Many of the calls that we respond to are for filth/squalor/hoarding conditions.  Quite often, we can help work through concerns without condemning the home.  We have paired a Social Worker to respond to home visits for complaints with our Sanitarian Inspectors to address health and human hazard concerns. This unique blend of complaint response allows this team to manage each situation in a new and improved way. We hear the stories of how homes got to the state they are currently in, and look for natural supports, services, or resources to help them be successful in their space.
